Sometimes people might unconsciously create/adapt things if they have forgotten the source of the original idea. It's called a phenomenon called unconscious plagiarism, often resulting from source monitoring error. However, I'm not accusing the author of plagiarism, I just thought it would be interesting to point out that there are similarities between these two series.

Thanks for the opinion! :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05904593804283835293noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6869508299162517490.post-26025001714344737502014-04-08T18:08:55.872+03:002014-04-08T18:08:55.872+03:00It's tough with that kind of similarity to fig...It's tough with that kind of similarity to figure out whether it was deliberate, unconscious, or simply an effect of a similar thought process. If you're dealing with magic in a nonmagical world, there are only so many ways you can handle the interface. This author does appear to have tried to differentiate. Just going by the blurb and your review, her boy isn't sent to a magical school, he's not a Chosen One, he doesn't appear to have sidekicks or friends. So there may be some similarities on the worldbuilding side, but not so much in the plot and characterization. I'm more inclined to accept similarities in worldbuilding than plot or characterization, myself, so this one probably wouldn't bother me that much.Lark @ The Bookwyrm's Hoardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08639732368395025578noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6869508299162517490.post-8743004195122455012014-04-07T22:42:42.512+03:002014-04-07T22:42:42.512+03:00Yeah, I do know that. It was just something that caught my eye, and I decided to throw it out there. I did like the book despite some of the similarities, and I do recommend it to others.

Thanks for commenting! :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05904593804283835293noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6869508299162517490.post-35113773537040826152014-04-07T22:37:44.369+03:002014-04-07T22:37:44.369+03:00You know I think similarities like that are unavoi...You know I think similarities like that are unavoidable. Everything has already been done - its all about making it stand out as still unique to the reader. I don't know if I'll decide to read this one but it's still on my radar.Tabitha (Pabkins)https://www.blogger.com/profile/11945588780690794396noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6869508299162517490.post-84547187705274107802014-04-07T17:39:37.107+03:002014-04-07T17:39:37.107+03:00You're so right there. I just recently had a discussion of this with one my friends, and we came into a conclusion that people often see what they want to see - if they are convinced that someone has plagiarised some other author, they won't easily let go of that opinion. But the cruel truth is that it's difficult to come across as truly original, just like you said.

Thanks for commenting! :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05904593804283835293noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6869508299162517490.post-50273569922312050952014-04-07T17:34:25.320+03:002014-04-07T17:34:25.320+03:00I think it's hard not to find similarities bet...I think it's hard not to find similarities between books. Everything has already been done, so it's hard to find something that comes across as being truly original. I'm glad you liked it, though. I checked Half Bad out of the library, but was too overwhelmed with other books to read it. So it went back to the library unread. I will probably go back to it when I have the time.Batch of Bookshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08011267256741853797noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6869508299162517490.post-12393436655463573312014-04-07T14:21:37.787+03:002014-04-07T14:21:37.787+03:00Thanks! :) Yeah, it bothered me a bit, but I'd...Thanks! :) Yeah, it bothered me a bit, but I'd like to hear the author's opinion before making any final judgements.
