Top Ten Tuesday this week is about
Top Ten "Gateway" Books/Authors In My Reading Journey
(so your list could be a mix of a books that got you into reading, an author that got you into reading a genre you never thought you'd read, a book that brought you BACK into read)
1. Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. His epic series A Song of Ice and Fire made me look at high fantasy from a completely different angle and demand for quality story telling in general.
2. Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone was one of the first proper books that I've ever read. So, I think I can thank J.K. Rowling for making me fall in love with books. The magic is real, right?
3. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This book made be fall in love with magical realism.
4. Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. He is the god of grotesque yet gripping stories.
5. If You Could See Me Now by Cecelia Ahern. I rarely read adult chick-lit, but I always aim to read Ahern's new books. If You Could See Me was so heartwarming yet sad story.
6. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Thanks to this amazing trilogy, I became a serious dystopia genre fan.
7. The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. TFIOS restored my belief in YA contemporary books, and that's saying something.
8. Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. Books can be epic AND funny, and Lynch definitely proved it to me!
9. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. If Harry Potter series aren't counted, Twilight Saga was the series that got me into reading YA fiction. I might not like the books anymore that much, but they still hold a special place in my heart for introducing the YA genre to me.
10. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Frankenstein was my "gateway" book to reading classics again after a long pause.

Martin kinda ruined fantasy for me in some ways, since I now have a harder time reading other stuff unless it's really good. And I'm just reading the Harry Potter series for the first time, so I'm looking forward to seeing how that story gets more complex. Great list!

DeleteI think Twilight got me back into YA fiction, too. I resisted for so long, and then once I was done with that series I realised I'd been missing out on YA and started seeking out more YA

DeleteHarry Potter is what got me into reading as well, I remember being young and waiting anxiously for each book, it was amazing! Twilight was another big one for me, got me into the whole paranormal thing. Great picks!
